These photos are from a session I did last fall. Somehow I missed posting them, and I think they deserve a post for sure.
The mom originally booked a portrait party session, so I captured some photos of her and her handsome boys in a more studio-type setting (like the last photo). As I went through the images after the session, I felt I did not capture exactly the right feel of this family. The mom is a friend of mine and I know personally how much she dearly loves her boys. I really wanted to capture that.
So I invited her back for a quick outdoor session at my home. It was late in the afternoon so the light was nice, but it was almost gone so we had to be quick. The oldest son was NOT in the mood to hold still for pictures. He was very playful and literally running away from the camera most of the time. So we let him play. And I absolutely love the black and white shot of him and his mom giggling and playing chase on the lawn. It's my favorite of the session because it captured a moment between mom and son.
A lot of people worry about having a family session with small kids because they think their children will not cooperate and hold still and say cheese nicely posed and perfect looking. Those perfectly posed moments may be nice sometimes, but don't always make the most meaningful portraits. I LOVE to capture your family and children as they are - whether timid or crazy!! That's what I think you'll want to remember about your young family anyway.
